Kenya to probe Facebook accounts of teachers before employment

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in Kenya has announced that it will probe into the Facebook accounts of its employees to ensure that the social media platform is not misused to cast the teaching profession.
In a statement released through the Director of Teacher Management, Mary Rotich, TSC stated that the law compels teachers not only to behave responsibly at school but also on social media, adding that they would start looking into the conduct of thier employees on all platforms before considering them for promotion.
'The Act gives us the power to monitor the conduct of teachers, as the TSC we are also thinking of starting to monitor what teachers exchange on social media. If you post irresponsible information on social media, such things do not show good conduct,' She added.
According to Kenyans.co, the new practice will also see the commission research on the social media activities of potential employees who undertake interviews at the TSC

45% of teachers absent as Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima, pays unscheduled visit to a public school in the state

45% of teachers who are on the payroll of the Borno state government were absent when the state governor, Kashim Shettima, paid an unscheduled visit to Lamisula Primary and Junior Secondary School located in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State.

The school has a total number of 87 teachers but after the government finished his roll call of teachers present, 43 teachers were absent out which 7 persons were on leave approved for them.
While reacting to the development, Governor Shettima said:
"It is really disturbing that in the heart of Maiduguri, our children are seating on the floor to learn despite thousands of school desks we have distributed. We have desks here that are bad and kept in one class, no one brought this to my attention and children who are desirous of learning are now seating on the floor. Even when the teachers are seating on the floor, more than 40% of teachers are absent. Those absent will face punishment to serve as deterrent to other teachers and workers" he said in anger.
Despite frantic efforts by some teachers who kept inviting their colleagues to quickly come to the school, 38 teachers, representing 44.6 % (approximately 45%) were recorded absent. The Governor also ordered the State mechanical workshop to convey desks to the school as pupils were found seating on bare floor.
The Governor spent nearly one hour at the school visiting each of the 14 classrooms at the primary and junior secondary levels during which he interacted with each of nearly 1,000 pupils and gave each a gift, before his departure.

Photos: Semi-decomposed body of Indian actress found hanging from ceiling in her flat

The police has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of 28-year-old film actress Bitasta Saha, whose semi-decomposed body was recovered from her south Kolkata apartment on Wednesday, February 8th.
Bitasta, who was a small-time actress in the Bengali entertainment industry, was found hanging from the ceiling in her flat in the southern part of Kolkata's Kasba area.

The incident came to light after she failed to reply to her mother's repeated phone calls for almost two days. Bitasta, used to reside at the apartment alone and her worried mom then visited the flat to check on her. When Bitasta did not open the door despite several knocks, her mother and neighbours informed police.
Police arrived, broke the door and found the actress's body hanging from the ceiling. The actress was reportedly in a relationship with an income tax officer, who according to the victim's family is said to be married.
What has led the police to suspect foul play is the fact that one of Bitasta's wrists was slit and there were several injury marks on her body too. The police believe that a victim could not slash one's wrist as well as hang oneself at the same time.
"Going by the preliminary signs it seems that she committed suicide. However, we are waiting for the postmortem report. The body appeared to be two-day-old and there was a bit of stench in the room," a police officer said. Police claimed the actress was under severe stress for quite sometime which could be a reason behind the incident.
"We have gone through her Facebook profile and posts, and found quite depressing posts on her wall... In fact at one point she had also talked about putting an end to her life...We are checking everything including her call details," police said.

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik step out for the first time since online racism row

Supermodel Gigi Hadid and her boyfriend Zayn Malik looked really laid back and casual as they stepped out in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Gigi flaunted her slender model figure in leather pants, a navy jumper, and tough ankle boots while Zayn wore a funky jumper, distressed jeans and ankle boots similar to his girlfriend's. He finished it off with a black beanie.

This is the first time the couple are seen in public since Gigi became the center of an online racism row and Zayn jumped to her defense. The row had started when Bella, Gigi's sister, shared a clip on her Instagram page of Gigi imitating a cookie in the shape of the Buddha by squinting her eyes. Most people took offense at her attempt at comedy, referring to it as insensitive and this prompted the video to be taken down, but the online onslaught continued.

In defense of his girlfriend, Zayn jumped into the fray, tweeting that Gigi actually likes Asians. He said that in reply to a Twitter user who asked him how he felt being of Asian descent and having his girlfriend mock Asians. His reply led to him being told by users of the social network that he doesn't understand what racism is.
Zayn's father is British Pakistani, while Gigi is half Palestinian - her father, Mohammad Hadid, is Middle Eastern.
